Ted Baxter Day Arkona Lions Club Museum and Information Centre Rock Glen Conservation Area Saturday, May 25, 2024

On Saturday, May 25, 2024 over 50 Ted Baxter family members and guests of the Arkona Lions Club assembled at Rock Glen to honour the memory of the founder of the Arkona Lions Museum, Ted Baxter (1897-1990). It was a wet but memorable event which began at 11:00am. The people assembled shared a common interest in the museum which was originally established by Ted Baxter back in 1959. His museum began in his house in Forest but was moved to Arkona in 1971. It was officially opened by the future Prime Minister of Canada, Jean Cretien on May 26, 1972. The museum was curated by Ted Baxter while he was able. It later was moved to Rock Glen where it is housed in the Interpretive Centre at Rock Glen owned by the Ausable Bayfield Conservation Area. The commemoration was marked by an open house and speeches by Greg Stott, a local historian and Cathy Fraser, a granddaughter of Ted’s and displays by two fossil experts, Rick Barnard and Tony Petropoulos. A collage of pictures of Ted and the museum was unveiled by Ted Baxter’s surviving daughter, Ardis Maxfield and his two great grandchildren Jax and Jet Sheffield. It was a wonderful time of celebration of this wonderful gentleman’s ongoing contribution to our knowledge and appreciation of our past history and geography.
